group.pngGroup discussion

In small groups of 2-4 watch the video again. Stop the video at the set times and discuss the questions below.
  • Stop video at 1:45 and discuss:
    • What businesses did Wardell Bourgeois and Kevin Rodney own? How was their businesses doing prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans in August of 2005?
  • Stop video at 2:46 and discuss:
    • One of the effects of the Hurricane is that businesses either are unable or unwilling to re-establish themselves in the original area that they were located in. What effects does this have on the businesses that Wardell Bourgeois owns?
  • Stop video at 5:17 and discuss:
    • How did Wardell Bourgeois and Kevin Rodney make the transition in their businesses from pre-Katrina to post-Katrina?
    • If you owned a business that was effected by a natural disaster what preventative measures would you take to help decrease the disruption to your business? What actions would you consider first immediately following a natural disaster for your business?
  • Stop video at 6:44 and discuss:
    • Why did Wardell Bourgeois and Kevin Rodney choose to stay in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and rebuild their businesses?
    • Would you have chosen to stay or leave? Why or why not?

Task Two

Reflect on the causes and effects of Hurricane Katrina.

group.pngGroup Reflection

Compose a 250-400 word reflection identifying the causes and effects on small business owners before and after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. What lessons can be learned? What suggestions would you make to small business owners trying to recover from the effects of a natural disaster? If possible, site examples from a natural disaster that you are familiar with or have researched.

You may like to refer back to Causes and Effects in the Problem Solving section.

Review and provide feedback on one group members reflection.
